Welcome to Studio Stratton

Design / Drafting / Coordination.

I grew up in a contractors home. Both my father and my older brother ran successful general contracting businesses and I began doing design work for them when I was 14 years old.

I took classes through the Regional Occupational Program and was certified as a draftsman before I graduated high school. At that point I went to work in an architects office. I apprenticed under some of San Diego’s finest residential architects including Jim Geldert, Don Edson, and Trip Bennett.

I have provided drawings for over 500 new homes, and thousands of additions and remodeling projects in the San Diego area over the past 30 years.

Who am I

Lance Stratton

Practical, Personal, Professional:
That’s who I am.

Creative functional design applied to every project I undertake:
That’s what I do.

As a San Diego area native, I am intimately familiar with the historical, cultural, and architectural influences of the region, as well as local design trends.  Knowing a little bit about how San Diego came about, can provide an interesting perspective on it’s future.

My training in residential design began in 1981 working for my father’s construction company in the then-sleepy town of Ramona.  As my career progressed, I apprenticed under some of San Diego’s finest residential architects, including Jim Geldert, Don Edson, and Trip Bennett.  I spent twelve years at Dewhurst and Associates in La Jolla, and it was there that I began to focus on kitchen design.

Having mastered the disciplines of my craft, I now work with the nation’s finest brands of cabinetry and appliances (including WmOhs, Plato Woodwork, Columbia Cabinets, and Sub-Zero/Wolf) as well as some of the best people in the business today. My design work is regularly featured in local and national publications, and I continue to be commissioned by many of California’s most discriminating homeowners.

My background in architecture and construction gives me a unique and valuable perspective as I approach design.  I am concerned with material, context, and scale, and I want my design to fit seamlessly into the vocabulary of the home.  As an extension of this philosophy, I am very comfortable working with architects and interior designers as part of a design team.  I like to think that I play well with others!

I'm so happy I found Lance to draft up plans for a master bathroom addition! Going into this process my husband and I had an idea of what we wanted and how we wanted the space to look, but Lance really brought it to life in the details, and was extremely helpful as well as informative when we had questions. I can't wait to submit our plans to the city and begin the process of building our much awaited Master Bathroom. Thank you for your outstanding, informative, and professional services!

When applying for a building permit we were faced with what seemed like insurmountable requirements by the building planning division of the city of El Cajon. We hired Lance Stratton of Studio Stratton Inc. We couldn’t have made a better decision. He knew exactly what was needed to meet building code and how to put it all down on paper to satisfy even the most fastidious civil servant.

Lance did an amazing job designing plans for my addition! His artistic skills and knowledge of construction are incredible. Lance designs by hand so he is knowledgeable of everything he is incorporating into the design. In addition to his skills i have really enjoyed working with him, happy to have made a friend in this process. Look forward to working with him in the future!
